Adieu Baba Kure

Given the pains that accompanied the demise of Alhaji Salman S.A Iyanda, it actually took two days before I could be composed to put down a tribute like this in honor of his memory, and this is because the death of Alhaji Salman came to me and many others as a rude shock. No doubt, Baba was a hero of his people and many of us who benefitted from a heart filled with the milk of human kindness. A loyal party man cum a politician with the fear of God. Beyond his ancestral home of Kure, Alhaji Salman, it is safe to say had paid his dues especially in championing the project of stabilizing Osin, Ilorin East local government and humanity at large.

Meanwhile, I ruminated and thought within me that Alhaji Salman's death, which is now eliciting emotions amidst us cannot be unexpected. The truth is that when an Iroko falls in the forest, everywhere vibrates, the earth quakes, the leaves crumble in obeisance to the force of gravity. And everyone can tell that something consequential has occurred.

Looking back, it is a known fact that people die everyday, but all of them affirm for us the goodness in humanity like Alhaji Salman. I am a beneficiary of his kindness but that will be a story for another day. However, I am glad he lived and died for his conviction. Times and circumstance decide who we meet in life. Our hearts decide who we want to retain in our lives, and people's behavior determined whether we want them to remain in our memories or not. Baba Salman was a good man. Many can tell.

The deceased, who had served as a one time PDP Chairman in Marafa/Pepele Ward and in other capacities was truly a kind man. A large-hearted and compassionate man. There are several testimonies to the assistance he rendered to persons and families in need. He just loved to be kind. He just loved to put smiles on people’s faces. He himself always wore a broad and bright smile. 'Baba Kure', as people fondly call him would be surely missed.

Death may have ended his life but not the relationships he had built with many over the years. And because of this alone, a lot of people who knew Baba Kure are understandably still going through grief and acceptance at the same time. He was a man of valour. Strength and dignity were his garb. And also, his gift and his legacy. But above all, it worth thanking God that Baba Kure ended well.

While alive, Baba was the ilk that loved and gave genuinely. He was honest and committed to family, friends and community. He was a proud illustrious man from Kure Community, who invested his energy and resources to galvanise deep loving ideas and make it work, as attested to by many including me.

My condolences therefore is to my friend, Mallam Abdulkadir Sheu Saliman, the family members, Kure community, Marafa/Pepele Ward, Osin, Ilorin East LGA and beyond. May God grant all of the fortitude to bear the loss of the good man we all found in Baba Kure.
My condolences.
