Effective Communication Key to Success of Government Programs, Says RAAMP National Coordinator

Calabar, Cross River State – The National Coordinator of the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), Engr. Aminu Bodinga Mohammed, has emphasized the vital role of effective communication in the successful implementation of government programs. Speaking at the opening of a five-day capacity-building workshop in Calabar, Mohammed highlighted that clear, consistent, and strategic communication is essential for building public trust and support for government initiatives.
The workshop, which brought together Development Communication Officers, Management Information Officers, and other key staff from RAAMP, focused on enhancing the communication skills necessary for the project’s success. Mohammed underscored the need for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritize the development of their communication teams, ensuring they are well-equipped to engage with the public effectively.
“Trust in government often wanes due to the absence of effective communication strategies,” Mohammed stated. “At RAAMP, we recognize the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in our communication efforts, which are crucial for effectively conveying the value and impact of our projects.”
The training session featured expert presentations, including a notable session by Dr. Okpanachi Yalo from the University of Calabar. Dr. Yalo’s presentation on “Agriculture Business, Agriculture Extension Services, Rural Development, and Community Outreach” explored the critical relationship between agricultural development and effective communication. He warned that misinformation or a lack of information could undermine even the best-intentioned projects.
Another significant topic discussed was the impact of corruption on food security, with participants examining how corrupt practices can erode public trust, disrupt supply chains, and threaten the food security of entire communities. The role of communication professionals in combating these issues through transparent and timely information was emphasized as crucial.
The overarching goal of the workshop was to empower RAAMP’s communication professionals with the skills needed to craft and execute effective communication strategies. These strategies are seen as essential for ensuring that government programs not only reach their intended audiences but also resonate with them, fostering greater public understanding and support.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants were awarded certificates of completion, recognizing the new skills and knowledge they had acquired. This training represents a significant step forward in RAAMP’s mission to enhance rural access and agricultural marketing, reflecting the organization’s commitment to not only delivering infrastructure but also ensuring that the benefits of such projects are effectively communicated and fully realized by the communities they serve.
